‘School is everywhere’? British military children, ‘turbulence’ and the meanings of post-war mobility

This article traces the emergence of term ‘turbulence’ to describe educational disruption experienced by military children after 1945. It asks why came dominate professional discussion education so much from late 1960s onwards and wider tensions it exposed in post-war Britain: between welfare warfare; ‘tradition’ progressiveness; individuals communities; families institutions. Moreover, this argues that childhood mobility twentieth century was at times refracted through assumptions about class rank, as well issues such immigration intelligence. Finally, uses oral history interviews reflect on how turbulence itself became part life stories many former service children, offering ‘composure’, explanation even a community which understand their sometimes-disrupted childhoods.
